The Perfect Moment

Eugene O’Kelly was the CEO of KPMG, one of the biggest accounting firms in the United States in the mid 2000’s. One day he got the news, “You have 3 golf-ball-sized tumors in your brain and you have 90 days to live.”

He spent the next 3 months of his life “unraveling” or wrapping up his most important relationships and giving them a sense of closure.

He did this by creating “Perfect Moments.”

He’d take a coworker on a walk through central park, invite an old friend out to a decadent meal, or take someone he loved on a long drive through the countryside. Although these moments had an undertone of sadness to them, they were truly celebrations of life and friendship and meaning.

Toward the end of his life, he said: “I experienced more Perfect Moments and Perfect Days in two weeks than I had in the last five years, or than I probably would have in the next five years, had my life continued the way it was going before my diagnosis. Look at your own calendar. Do you see Perfect Days ahead? Or could they be hidden and you have to find a way to unlock them?”

What would it take for you to create a perfect moment with the one you love this weekend? What would it mean to you to have a perfect moment for your marriage every week... or every day?

When you get married, you are committing your life to your partner. Often times we think about this as a duration of time… some people even refer to it as a jail sentence - you know, “Till death do you part.” But what if committing your life with your partner was less about the amount of time you spend together, and more about creating the moments where you feel like you’re truly living?

“I had come to wonder about the true nature of commitment. In fact, it's not about time. It's not about reliability and predictability. Commitment is about depth. It's about effort. It's about passion. It's about wanting to be in a certain place, and not somewhere else. Of course time is involved; it would be naïve and illogical to suggest otherwise. But commitment is best measured not by the time one is willing to give up but, more accurately, by the energy one wants to put in, by how present one is.”

Take some time this week to create a Perfect Moment.

Share your plans for your Perfect Moment in the comments. I’d love to hear about it and maybe it will inspire someone else to level up their love.
